When traditional craftsmanship meets modern aesthetics, they do not necessarily contradict each other, but spark off the best that is in them. The Bucket arch stool from Slowwood Creation is made using traditional mortise and tenon techniques with bracket structure. The designer, Chi-ming CHOI, described this architectural technique from ancient China as awe-inspiring. “Simple principle but complex operation. A high level of precision is required for components to fit in one another," he explained. The stool also incorporates the butterfly tenon technique for stability.

The Blend of Cultures
Recognizing the growing popularity of woodworking products among young people, the Founder of Slowwood Creation, Tommy CHEUNG, suggested using solid woodlike walnut to evoke a sense of luxury. By incorporating three-dimensional carved porcelain tiles as decoration at the center of the seat, the products cater to the tastes of the new generation.

Chi-ming thinks that the work epitomizes the broad global perspective of Hong Kong people, which is the strength of Hong Kong design. "Being rooted in Chinese culture but equipped with knowledge of Western culture, Hong Kong designers have our unique sense. When combined with our local culture, there is great potential for the explosion of design creativity," said Chi-ming.
