Elwin Ha & Joe Lin

Stepping into the Children’s World
User experience (UX) is a crucial factor in design. So how would UX differ if the users were children? Can adult designers understand their needs and provide a good experience? Elwin Ha and Joe Lin, the designers of Kazoo Technology, had given their first trial in developing products for toddlers. The trial-and-error process makes them finally win the hearts of the little users.

Cookie Kiddle is a multi-sensory toy with a dice and tablet mini games, for the purpose of learning English and training motor skills. Elwin once let the children try out the prototypes, "Some children played with the box instead of the toy itself,", he recalled. The mismatch between the expected and observed behaviour of Cookie Kiddle’s little users drove him to create more prototypes and collect more feedback, before he was confident enough to finalize the design.

Keep Trying and Gained Recognition
Responsible for Cookie Kiddle’s art direction, Joe decided to impress the children with colours after reading several children’s books. He also encountered difficulties, "The children’s paintings are too casual, compared with usual electronic images. It took me repeated attempts to decide on Cookie Kiddle’s art direction,", said Joe. As the effort is recognized by the Hong Kong Smart Design Awards, Joe longs for more competitions and idea-exchange platforms in the design sector, for promoting local designs in the global market.
