Due to rapid industrialization, Hong Kong needed to make space for packaging and printing processes. Thus, In the 1980s, Kwun Tong became the hub for printing factories. However, nowadays, many of these printing factories have been closed or relocated to the Pearl River Delta. This serves as a reflection on the old Kwun Tong as a printing hub.
The installation “Printing Kwun Tong” commemorates the now faded printing industry. The installation “prints” the user’s silhouette with the CMYK primary colors used in Offset Printing. The printing industry in Kwun Tong may entirely fade out one day, but we hope that this industry can be redefined and celebrated, as a part of Hong Kong’s history.
We are using a pioneer interactive motor system, but to demonstrate the CMYK graphic in a contemporary and sustainable way. Our design mechanics combine the old traditions with new technology to create this installation. Namely the old brush and motor mechanics coupled with the new computer scripting technology.
