Games serve more than mere entertainment. Serious games aim to change behavior and even drive social changes. The game “Get Lost!” designed by Blackbody Lab takes gender identity as its theme. Players ask each other questions to guess where their family members are through the impressions told by other players.

Talking on a Taboo Subject
Cyril LEE, one of the designers, emphasized that the game is not about their personal stances, but the stimulation of discussion, “A character described as feminine by other players may not actually be a woman. When people notice the oddity, they naturally discuss after playing the game,” he said. The game provides an opportunity for people to focus on issues that are rarely touched upon and share their thoughts, “Providing a framework to discuss sensitive topics is better than avoiding them completely,” he believes.

The visual elements are in line with the meaning behind the game. Designed in a maximalism style, it gives a sense of chaos at first glance, symbolizing the complexity of gender issues. When the game ends, however, the cards are neatly arranged, which symbolizes that the chaotic status quo will become clear through rational discussion.
