With the rise of the concept of metaverse, three-dimensional pixel technology is gradually becoming popular. The Web3 game “MetaHKDI” developed by Hong Kong Design Institute includes several three-dimensional materials to build a virtual space for players to explore.

Play to Learn
Ken WONG, both as the teacher and metaverse planner, stated that the design team spent a long time developing the game, as they did not only make effort on mastering the new technology and using an appropriate amount of pixel grids to create objects, but also designing a creative layout for the game, “Every detail of the setting is important for creating a space for students to be immersed in,” he explains. Therefore, he collected opinions from student and ultimately created a game world with two layers, with the upper layer being the future world and the lower layer being the old Hong Kong.

Ken observed the activities in the virtual space help with the learning in the real world, provided that the game is well-designed. For example, students searched for information on the street food stalls and non-air-conditioned buses, familiarizing themselves with the old Hong Kong. “Young people like playing games, so we incorporate learning into it,” said Ken.
